Every XBOX 360 owner should be taking full advantage of Microsoft’s Games With Gold initiative. If you have an active XBOX Live Gold account and hard drive space, then you’ve got yourself 2 free games every month!
Games With Gold started back in June of last year, but it wasn’t the first program of it’s kind. Sony has been offering free games to Playstation Plus members since June of 2010. Not only has Sony been offering free games longer, but they also have a history of offering better titles than Microsoft, and for multiple platforms as well.
Regardless of what the titles are, a free game is a free game, right? Some titles are pretty good ones: Fable 3, Halo 3, Dead Rising 2, & Gears of War. Others are more of a long shot: Lara Croft, Clash of Heroes, A World of Keflings. Personally, I don’t care what the game is. If I have the space, which I do, I download it. Some of them I’ve played for hours on end, while others of them I haven’t played since I downloaded them.
Earlier this month, Hitman: Absolution was the free game. I’m sure I’ll love it, but I haven’t gotten around to playing it yet. And I just finished downloading Deadlight, a side-scrolling zombie survival platformer. I’m pretty caught up in the whole zombie apocalypse movement, so I’ll more than likely be playing that one here pretty soon.
If you haven’t already checked out Games With Gold, go ahead and download Deadlight now. The worst thing that happens is you play it and hate it. It’s not like you’re gambling on a brand new $60 game. You’ve got nothing to lose, and it’s nice to know that Microsoft is at least trying to give back to their customers.
Major Nelson also announced right around the release of the XBOX ONE that Games With Gold would be coming to the ONE in 2014.
Great news: Access to free games each month is coming for Xbox Live Gold members on #XboxOne – Details coming later in 2014

Couple this with the rumors that Microsoft is considering offering backwards compatibility, and I’d say that things are starting to look up for Bill Gates’ baby. With a pretty weak launch, shoty multiplayer, and a fairly poor selection of games, it’s good to see that there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
For those of us who’ve invested in XBOX, we’d be crazy not to take whatever they wanted to give us.
Have you downloaded some of the Games With Gold titles? Which ones were your favorite? Which ones weren’t worth the hard drive space?
And who knows… maybe we could play some Crackdown together.
