With the immense popularity and controversy over the cancellation of Sony’s formerly upcoming comedy The Interview, censorship is a huge topic and in the spirit of said news I decided why not do what we in game journalism do best, and create a list for your amusement.
As with most any form of censorship many of these instances are highly controversial, some cases sexual, and many violent in nature, so discretion is advised, with that in mind. here are my Top Five: Censored Games Of All Time.
In a game centered around running pedestrians down in a bloody mess for points, it’s no surprise that Carmageden was censored in some regions. After the game failed to pass certification in both the UK and Germany; neither versions could be sold until the violence was toned down. The developers of the game responded by replacing the human pedestrians of the original US version with zombies for the UK version, and Robots for Germany version respectively.
One of last generations most beloved games was censored in Japan. In the town of Megaton, NPC Mr. Burke was re- moved, denying players access to the side quest The Power of Atom. In the mission players are given the option of detonating the nuclear bomb that resides in the center of the town, the quest was removed due too obvious reasons in light of the events that took place in Hiroshima, and Nagasaki during World War II.
3.Soldier of Fortune(2000)
The first person shooter was banned in Germany and Australia do too graphic violence and the now some what typical mechanic of dismembering limbs when shot. In British Columbia the game was rated as a pornographic movie in an attempt to keep the game out of the hands of young gamers.
2.South Park: The Stick of Truth(2014)
Anything attached to the franchise of South Park is generally known to be extremely raunchy, but European and Australian censors were obviously still surprised by parts of the game replacing Seven of the scenes with stills of a Kuala (pictured above) and the statue of David respectively. Each still accompanied by a description of what was supposed to happen in the scene.
How could we have a list of the top censored games without including the game started it all. Due to the fighting games intense violence namely the games fatality system which depicted the gruesome death of the losing opponent in Mortal Kombat some form of rating system had too be developed. Outraged parents, and Strong protestors of the games violence forced the creation of the ESRB rating system.
That’s my Top Five: Censored Games of all time.Believe my list is completely wrong? Tell me just how wrong I am and let me know your Top Five in the comments bellow.
