Who are you? What are you? Where are you?
Nihilumbra From the Void to Vita
Three very good questions asked at the beginning of ‘Nihilumbra’, a unique platformer by BeautiFun games. Previously released in iOS and PC. Nihilumbra finally finds its way to Playstation Vita January 27, 2015.
You are Born, a creature created from a dark anti-matter entity known as “The Void” which wants Born to return to it and pursues him throughout the game. Anything in its way will be consumed and destroyed.
Previously released on iOS, the controls were largely touch based, but now a permanent resident on Vita, button functionality has been added, and is a very nice transition, otherwise, touch controls are quick and responsive. Albeit your character doesn’t engage in a huge variety of moves, aside from walking back and forth and jumping.
The main feature of the game is being able to change the game’s environment through the use of color. There are five colors in all, to be collected at various points during the game. My personal favorite for example, is the color green. After collecting green, you can place it into the game environment via the touchscreen. Green gives Born a much higher bounce then it can naturally jump, making it possible to reach higher platforms. Different colors control new elements of the world, and can be used to either solve puzzles or defeat enemies.
The game’s music is very dramatic and eerie sounding, giving you the feeling that you really are lost and don’t know what’s going on, or what to do, feelings echoed by the game’s narrator, who does a great job telling you the story and pushing you along.
Play it Again Sam
There are five worlds in total, each one increases in challenge and concludes with a twist, which is unappreciated unless you complete the game. There’s plenty of replay value to be had for certain!
Nihilumbra brings us great storytelling, tone and music, but it leaves you feeling a little lost at the beginning. Any fan of abstract stories, and adventure will enjoy this title, you begin a little lost, but all your questions are soon answered.
