Twelve years after the release of the first game, Halo is still going strong. After six games, Bungie handed the reigns over to 343 Industries, and 343 has breathed new life into the franchise. Halo 4–the first in a new trilogy–was released in November to high praise.
But there was something special about Halo 4 that took the industry by storm: Spartan Ops. Spartan Ops was a co-op mode in Halo 4, where you and a group of buddies would play a story mode that was separate from the single player story mode. Yeah, co-op is nothing new to video games, but here’s what sets Spartan Ops apart: the missions are released in weekly “episodes”, with the episodes being a part of a “season”, and each episode containing four “chapters”. Sound familiar? 343 Industries has taken the TV Show format, and applied it to video games.
Episodes 1-5 were released weekly from November to December, before they took a mid-season break. But have no fear, Spartan Ops will soon return. Tomorrow, Season 1 will continue with Episode 6. After that, an episode will be released every week until the season finale on February 26th, bringing Season 1 to 10 episodes in total.
Reports are that the second half of the season will be less repetitive than the first, and that things are really going to ramp up in terms of not only action, but story as well. And given the success of the first season (and the fact that the season is numbered), one could assume that the story will continue in a second season, possibly coming this summer.
Here’s the trailer for episodes 6-10. Possible spoilers ahead!
